Authors Linda A. Roussel, DSN, RN, NFA-BC, CNL and Tricia Thomas, PhD, BSN, FACHE, NFA-BC, ACNS-BC, CNL recently spoke during a Jones & Bartlett Learning webinar about their new text, Management and Leadership for Nurse Administrators, Seventh Edition. During the webinar both authors discussed the focus of the new edition as well as the general trends in healthcare that drove the revisions.
Roussel and Thomas highlighted the major trends in healthcare that are influencing nursing leadership in today’s world. These trends include limited access to healthcare for certain populations, breakthrough therapies, high costs of treatments, increase in out of pocket expenses, evolving healthcare models, and care delivery redesign. Understanding the evolving and changing landscape of healthcare is crucial for nurses to find success in the field. The Seventh Edition of the text has an intense focus on translational science including leadership, quality, innovation, messaging and coaching, all of which these three authors believe are important aspects of being a successful leader in the world of nursing today.
The “sphere of influence is changing and expanding,” says Roussel, which calls for “innovative leadership.” With all of these changes in healthcare occurring, it is also important to understand that the population needing and receiving this care is also changing. The authors discuss how it is imperative that nurses be aware of cultural perspective when providing care in an effort to increase patient wellness. “Professional development is a trajectory,” argues the authors, and nurses must “lead and direct healthcare reform to meet the needs of society.” This webinar is a great resource for those interested in nursing leadership and how the shifting models and aspects of healthcare are changing patient care and the nursing profession.
