    Michelle A. Dart, author of Motivational Interviewing in Nursing Practice: Empowering the Patient, is an advocate for communication strategies to promote behavioral change. As a Certified Diabetes Educator and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, she has worked closely with diabetic children and their families. For the past 7 years, Dart has facilitated a diabetes support group sponsored by a local community health organization.

    Dart obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Elmira College in 1995 and a Master’s Degree from Upstate Medical University in 2001. Author and contributor to several Nursing textbooks, Dart’s work has included educating according to developmental stage, blood glucose monitoring, motivational interviewing, and helping children learn self-management skills for diabetes. In addition to providing Diabetes education through support groups and workshops, she is also the on-site medical director of Lion’s Camp Hickory, a diabetes day camp.

    Dart is a member of the the National Association of Professional Women, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the American Diabetes Association, the Obesity Society, the Obesity Action Coalition, the Diabetes Education and Camping Association, and the American Camping Association. This September, she will provide the keynote address at the Nurses Teaching Day sponsored by Upstate Medical University College of Nursing.
