Kristin Parker, our Director of Design, was recently named one of the top 10 finalists in the Under Armour What’s Beautiful contest, a national competition to redefine the female athlete. The contest, drawing more than 50,000 participants, recognizes women “setting epic goals and pushing past where [they’ve] ever been and where [they] thought [they] could go.”

For Kristin, fitness competitions are just as much about community and celebrating others as they are about learning a new yoga pose or running more miles.

“It was a great experience and I was blown away by the women in the competition,” she said. “We all had different goals and everyone was so encouraging and respectful of each other’s goals and accomplishments, no matter how large or small.”

What inspired her to enter the contest? Earlier this year, Kristin, a long-time athlete and fitness devotee, decided to compete in the upcoming New England Tough Mudder with her husband. Designed by British Special Forces, this grueling 10-12 mile obstacle course deemed “probably the toughest event on the planet®” tests even the most hardcore athletes. Immediately upon setting this impressive goal, Kristin began training and joined some of Under Armour’s online communities and competitions. She also documented her journey on Instagram, where one of her colleagues encouraged her to enter the What’s Beautiful contest.

As a new mom and busy professional, Kristin initially resisted, but eventually decided to enter, opening her up to a vast network of fellow athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

“So many times as women, we’re really competitive,” she said. “But in this competition, it was so much more about encouraging each other and supporting each other’s goals, whether that was doing 10 push-ups with good form to something as ambitious as becoming nationally ranked in your discipline. It was a diverse set of women with very different goals. It is truly a sisterhood and it has been an unbelievable experience.”
