National Nurses WeekIt's one of our favorite times of the year-- National Nurses Week! Celebrated annually from May 6, National Nurses Day, through May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday, National Nurses Week raises awareness and recognizes the tireless dedication, commitment, and heroic efforts of nurses across the country. This year, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has selected the theme of "Delivering Quality and Innovation in Patient Care."

Originating in 1954 with a bill introduced by U.S. Congresswoman and nursing advocate, Frances Payne Bolton of Ohio, National Nurses Week was officially established in 1991. This year, the ANA is spotlighting the contributions of registered nurses (RNs) as both expert clinicians and leaders in health care with the opportunity to influence the quality and the performance of the health care system both now and into the future. According to the ANA,

"Now more than ever, RNs are positioned to assume leadership roles in health care, provide primary care services to meet increased demand, implement strategies to improve the quality of care, and play a key role in innovative, patient-centered care delivery models. The nursing profession plays an essential role in improving patient outcomes, increasing access, coordinating care, and reducing health care costs. That is why both the Affordable Care Act and the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Future of Nursing report place nurses at the center of health care transformation in the United States."

No matter if you're an experienced nurse, just starting out, still in school, or continuing your education, we celebrate you this and every week. Thank you for your amazing contribution to the world, nurses!
