The quest for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is central to all efforts in global health. Indeed, all high-income countries, except the United States, have had a system of universal health coverage for some time and all low-and middle-income countries have at least a commitment in principle to achieving UHC as soon as possible.

In this context, it is important for those of us who teach global health to understand the concept of UHC, some of the key reference materials that deal with UHC, and some of the countries that we want our students to study to best understand the “quest for universal health coverage.”

Posted by Katie Hennessy on Aug 5, 2016 2:02:03 PM

Richard Skolnik – Author of Global Health 101, Third Edition

In April 2016, Unite for Sight asked me to facilitate a workshop on teaching global health at its annual Global Health and Innovation Conference. This followed a similar workshop I led in April 2014.

The aims of the 90-minute workshop were to exchange ideas about:

    • How teachers and students might keep up to date in such a rapidly changing field
    • Some of the key value and content issues in teaching global health
    • How participants might get better access to selected global health “experts”

Richard Skolnik – Author of Global Health 101

In April 2014, Unite for Sight asked me to facilitate a workshop on teaching global health at its annual Global Health and Innovation Conference.

The aims of the 90-minute workshop were to exchange ideas about:

    • The learning objectives of introductory courses in global health
    • The content of an introductory course on global health
    • Approaches to teaching global health that encourage student interest and learning

The workshop attracted about 75 people. Almost everyone in the workshop was involved with teaching global health but a few participants were students of global health or former students of global health.

Posted by Cassie Peterson on Feb 26, 2014 9:08:59 AM

Richard Skolnik – Author of Global Health 101

Students regularly come to me asking what they need to know to work in Global Health. They also frequently ask what I wish I had known when I was their age (which was almost too long ago to remember, of course)! Let me offer some comments below on “what I would want to know (and not know) if I were you.” Hopefully, this will help answer at least some of the questions that are on students’ minds, as they think about pursuing a career in Global Health.

Teaching about Health Equity and Equality

Posted by Cassie Peterson on Jan 31, 2014 10:14:09 AM

Richard Skolnik – Author of Global Health 101

Equity and equality issues are central to Global Health and we want all of our students to be able to take an “equity lens” to Global Health concerns. Thus, it is critical to introduce equity and equality early in our courses and to reinforce these themes throughout the courses.
