Did you know that today is Get Ready Day? Every year to coincide with National Preparedness Month, the American Public Health Association (APHA) designates the third Tuesday in September as Get Ready Day. Launched in 2006, it helps prepare families, communities, and individuals for disasters ranging from the pandemic flu to hurricanes and heat waves.
On Get Ready Day, APHA encourages all communities to take the preparedness pledge, create emergency plans and plan events within their neighborhood, campus, workplace, or school to draw attention to the importance of being ready for emergencies.
“Disasters strike when people least expect and in a variety of ways, making preparedness essential,” said Susan Polan, APHA associate executive director. “Our goal is that Get Ready Day will encourage Americans to stop and evaluate their preparedness, and ensure that they, along with their communities are well-informed and ready.”
Recent extreme weather events such as Superstorm Sandy, man-made tragedies like the Madrid train bombings, the threat of bioterrorism, and emerging infections such as the H1N1 pandemic flu, have created profound threats to health of populations around the globe. That's why we recently published Case Studies in Public Health Preparedness and Response to Disasters by Linda Y. Landesman and Isaac B. Weisfuse.
Through 16 case studies, the authors examine the broad range of public health scenarios through the lens of emergency preparedness and planning. Designed for students across a wide spectrum of health and safety disciplines, this text uniquely applies the public health preparedness competencies established by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH). According to Michael Osterholm Ph.D, MPH, Professor and Director, Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, University of Minnesota, the text,
"...is written by some of the best emergency preparedness and response professionals in the business; it is a must read for anyone who needs to prepare for or respond to an emergency."
Don't miss our author signing with Linda Y. Landesman at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting & Expo in Boston, MA on Monday, November 4 at 2pm in Booth #1029!
