Our author, David F. Kisor, recently wrote an editorial for the Personalized Medicine journal called "Making personalized medicine an expectation of pharmacy students." In the editorial, Kisor writes that,

“A clear ‘overarching’ responsibility of pharmacy education as described by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy is to “…prepare graduates who provide patient-centered care that ensures optimal medication therapy outcomes…”. In order to accomplish this, personalized medicine must be integral to
the broad scope of pharmacy education.”

David F. Kisor, PharmD, RPh, is Professor of Pharmacokinetics and Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences at Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Kisor is also an author of the just published Pharmacogenetics, Kinetics, and Dynamics for Personalized MedicinePharmacogenetics, Kinetics, and Dynamics for Personalized Medicine, a primer to understand pharmacogenetics in the applied context of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

    • Shows how these principles and scientific advances can create optimal individual patient care, that is, “personalized medicine"
    • Uses specific drug examples to explore how the genetic constitution of an individual may lead to the need for an altered dose or in some cases alternative drug therapy
    • Real-world cases highlight the specific relationships between genetics, drug action, and the body’s response as well as adverse drug reactions, altered metabolism, and drug efficacy
    • Also discussed are ethical issues concerning pharmacogenomics and study design
