This month marks the 13th anniversary of Health Literacy Month, a grassroots initiative founded by Jones & Bartlett Learning author, Helen Osborne, to raise awareness about the need for more easily understandable health communication. This year's theme is “Be a Health Literacy Hero."
Want to make the biggest impact this Health Literacy Month? HealthLiteracy.com suggests that you:
- Spread the word. What inspired you to be a health literacy advocate? Maybe it was when you attended a health literacy conference. Or read a research article or health literacy book. As so often happens, many of us were inspired by personal experiences when health communication went badly or, more rarely, when it went well. Take action this year by spreading the word about why health literacy matters. If you are at a loss for stories, please share those available at the Health Literacy Month website.
- Partner with others. While you may sometimes feel like a voice of one, please know that you are not alone when it comes to advocating for health literacy. There is an ever-growing number of regional and state-wide health literacy collaborations working to make a sustainable difference. A good place to find like-minded folks (alas, only within the U.S) is at the CDC’s “Health Literacy Activities by State.”
- Make a business case about why health literacy matters. There are now thousands of research studies confirming that health information is hard to understand. This year, I challenge you to measure the bottom-line (financial) benefit when we communicate more clearly. I hope you will be inspired to take action after listening to these Health Literacy Out Loud podcasts “Making a Business Case to Move Health Literacy Forward” with David Walsh. And “Making a Business Case for Plain Language" with attorney Joe Kimble.
