Essentials of Global Health is now on Coursera.
I am pleased to inform you that Coursera has just launched a massive open online course (MOOC) that I did for Yale, called Essentials of Global Health. You can enroll in the first session by going to:
You can also find it by searching for Essentials of Global Health on Coursera’s home page:
A number of very good global health MOOCs are already online. However, we tried in a number of ways to add substantial value to these efforts.
First, among the MOOCs, our course is a uniquely comprehensive introduction to global health. It covers a wide range of topics and provides the foundations for further study and practice. Second, our course is based on the global health courses I have taught over the last 15 years at The George Washington University and Yale. Thus, our MOOC seeks to present all of its material in the simplest and clearest possible ways. Third, our course, in many ways, is a digital version of my widely used textbook, Global Health 101, and can be used side by side with the book if desired. In addition, the video sessions for the course were filmed in a “classroom” with a small group of students, to make the videos more engaging for all types of learners.
We have also developed an extensive syllabus for the course, which includes some of the most important and up to date readings on key global health topics. These are linked with discussion prompts for each of the 31 sessions. Moreover, three of the sessions feature videos of colleagues who are at the top of their game on women’s health, immunization, and neglected tropical diseases.
Those new to MOOCs and Coursera will want to know that anyone can sign up for the course and take it for free. Just go to coursera.org/learn/essentials-global-health/ and enroll as an auditor to access the courses for free. The course will be offered every four weeks, starting this week and you will be able to sign up for the course a week or so in advance of the start of each new session.
Once you sign up for the course, you will be able to follow it in order of the modules, if you like or you can skip around week-by-week to work on only the modules that interest you.
Those interested in earning a certificate for successfully completing the course (earning 80% or above across the assessments) can pay $49 for a Coursera certificate.
I want to encourage you to take a look at the course, whether you want to learn more about global health, are a global health or development advocate or practitioner, or are a teacher or student of global health. Hopefully, you will find the course enlightening and enjoyable. Hopefully, you will also find the course a unique opportunity to enhance your knowledge in this field, based on a well-regarded Yale course, at exceptionally low cost.
