According to a new Gallup poll, nurses are the most trusted profession in America. In fact, when asked to rate the honesty and ethical standards across a wide range of professions, 82% gave nurses “high” or “very high” ratings.
Nurses have topped this list since 1999, Gallup reports, “with the exception of 2001. That year, Gallup included firefighters on a one-time basis, given their prominent role in 9/11 rescue efforts.” Other professions making the list were pharmacists, grade school teachers, medical doctors, military officers, and police officers. Lobbyists, members of Congress, and car sales people landed at the bottom of the list.
“Nurses are on the front lines of health care. We advocate on patients’ behalf whether we are at the bedside or in the boardroom,” said American Nurses Association President Karen A. Daley, PhD, RN, FAAN. “Patients understand that nurses are committed to improving the quality of their care, and this poll reflects the high regard they have for the profession.”
